Unit 11 Detailed study of the text 1. to go through (1) to pass or complete(a stage) 经历,经受,通过(考试等) Your suggestion has to go through several stages. (2) to undergo /suffer . The police went through(search 搜查) the pockets of the suspected thief. 2. to be meant to do sth ----- to be supposed to do sth (to be intended to do sth ) The boy is so clever that he is meant to go to the first-rate university(of our country). cf. I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings .I didn’t mean to(intend to). Your friendship means a great deal to me.(I value it highly ) 3. concentrate on ----to fix one’s attention on (sth, someone or doing sth) Please be quite, I’m trying to concentrate on my work. Many firms are concentrating on increasing their markets overseas. cf. We must concentrate our efforts on(direct firmly on (a subject) (focus on ,keep on)) finding ways to reduce costs. 4. to resign oneself to — to be prepared to accept (sth/doing sth often unpleasant ) 使听从于, 使顺从 You must resign yourself to your fate .你必须任命 听天由命。 to resign oneself to another’s guidance 听从别人指导。 另:The mother was unwilling to resign to the child to(把··托付给) the care of her · relatives. 5. to give oneself to — to give (oneself/one’s time(life) completely to (sth/doing sth) The scientist gave himself up to a study of the life history of butterflies.这个科学家投身于蝴蝶 (演变过程)的研究。 He has given himself up to a life of crime . cf. Don’t give yourself up to(yield to (a feeling))sadness ,there’s still hope! 6. to carry out ---to fulfill/perform (sth) We all have certain duties and jobs to carry out.. Every possible text was carried out to decide the nature of his illness. 7. undertake (to do) sth (1) start (a piece of work)着手做 进行 从事。 undertake a revolutionary work 从事一项革命事业。 undertake detailed and comprehensive investigations 出事细致和全面的调查。 (2) make oneself responsible for ,agree(to do sth)承担,接受,同意。 undertake responsibility 承担责任。 He undertake to be our guide. 他同意做我们的向导。 8. wander (1) go from place to place without any special purpose or destination 漫游 闲逛 漫步 徘徊 彷 徨。 to wander about (up and down) the street aimlessly (漫无目的)在街上徘徊。 (2) leave the right path or direction

Nth could tempt him to take such a step. —attract to have to do sth The hot weather tempted us to go for a swim. Temptation (n.) —tempting / being tempted The temptation of love ruined his career. —(cn)that which tempts / attracts The sight of the purse on the table was a strong temptation to the poor. 13. to get down to sth / doing sth----- to begin to give serious attention to (sth such as work, or doing sth ) (1) I really must get down to my studies, I’ve been lazy too long . (2) When we get down to details , the plan seems possible . 14. on end — (1) upright The ghost stroy set their hair on end. (2) continuously 连续 two hours on end. 15. procedure (n) —(the regular) order of doing things esp. legal and political. The usual procedure at committee meeting. 16. in case +从句—if it should happen that ; because of a possibility. In case I forget, please remind me of my promise. in case of +短语 Take an umbrella with you in case of rain.

Dictation The term education has had a variety of definitions. The traditional view of education is expressed in the formal teaching activities conducted in schools and universities. A better definition is that education is a lifelong process that includes both formal schooling and the broad range of other experiences, including television viewing, out-of-class activities, and family living, that usually take more time and often have more powerful influences than the formal schooling does.
